What are emojis by Anchita Aurora

An introduction to emoticons, difference between emoticons and emojis and their range.

Have you ever texted anyone with an image of a smiling face, a sad face or even a heart? If you have you will clearly know what these cute images are known as, they are called emojis.
Emojis are virtual and pictorial representations of many feelings and actions which you might want to show or explain during texting, sending emails and a lot more!
Many people have used punctuation marks and basic symbols to form simple faces (for example: a 3 and a > makes a heart- <3, a : and a ) makes a smile- :) ). These are kn0wn as emoticons and this is where emojis have derived from.

This term is based on two words, emotions and icons. Majority of us people get confused between emoticons and emojis, they also believe they are the same! In reality, emoticons are just symbols that form basic shape looking pictures and emojis are like images of them.
This article consists of information on emojis and a little bit on emoticons as that is what emojis are based on. It might be interesting to know a lot more about these cute and colourful emojis!

Evert software in each smartphone has it's own range of emojis, Apple has a versatile range of detailed emojis, Windows has simple but brighter ones, Android emojis are mainly alien-themed (the mascot).

One place where emojis haven't really been developed are the softwares used for laptops/computers. It would be nice if the keyboards for these gadgets develop a set of emojis as it might make power points and word documents interesting.

Nowadays emojis have many products based upon them, there are amazing emoji themed caps, t-shirts, nail stickers and even phone covers!

Emojis are clearly a trend these days, it might be fascinating and nice to know a little more about these virtual creatures and acknowledge the emoticons and also people behind them!

The Birth of The Emojis 
This chapter is about the beginning of emoticons and emojis
As mentioned before emojis are based on emoticons. Emoticons were first accidently formed by a poet Robert Herrick in 1648, he had accidently in a poem made a smiling face (: In 1882 also, a segment in New York Times written by Abraham Lincoln also had an accidental winking face emoticon ;) due to a printing error.

The first time emoticons were intentionally printed was in 1882 itself in the Puck Magazine. It was mentioned how one can create typographical art which now are known as emoticons. In 2001, the term emoticon was added in the Oxford dictionary.

Once emoticons got popularised, the japanese began with emojis which literally means picture character in japanese. The official creations of emojis began with a japanese telecom company, NTT Docomo. They added a black heart symbol to their Pocket Bell pages.
In 1999, Shigetaka Kurita, added a 100 emojis which could only work on NDD Docomo’s network, unfortunately, the company was unable to obtain a copyright for these emojis and hence many other Japanese companies copied their idea.

Emojis were just popular in Japan, but they became more well known across the world when Google included a set of emojis for Gchat (now known as Hangouts) and Gmail in 2007.

By 2011 Apple had included an emoji keyboard and after that many other softwares also included it. Towards 2012, everybody knew about emojis, slowly their usage and popularity started increasing and slowly they have started to become a part of us and they really affect our day to day life.

Good and Bad Parts
This chapter briefly highlights the pros and cons and how emojis may affect us if they are used too much

Emojis affect us in both good and bad ways, they have their pros and they also have their cons. The best feature about these emojis is that they clearly make typing easier, they also make expressing your emotions through typing simple. One example is that on text somebody asks you how you feel, you can simply type a smile emoji quickly or you will type ‘I am good’. Now which one is more convenient?
Another good thing about emojis is that they can be good sources of entertainment! There are many jokes and videos based on these virtual creatures! Smosh.com and many other sites have showcased many creative ways to use emojis and trying them out is very fun!

The negative part about these emojis is that they may make typing easier, but they are somewhat a form of slang, and as they flourish, we are losing upon the richness of writing that only words can give us.
You may not know this but certain local libraries have started accepting books in emoji language (Moby Dick, Pinnochio and Oliver Twist are a few of them), it is interesting, simple and fun, but people who are just reading the emoji versions of books are losing out on the rich and incredible writing the wonderful authors have used.

In the future, if emojis dominate the art of writing, the beauty of writing through words will be erased, and people in the future will lose out on a lot.

Emojis are both good and bad, it will be the best that they should be used but in a limit. We should enjoy using them throught text but keeping it restrained from books will be good.
